Snapshot: Dog days

A couple of weeks ago, I tagged along while some friends went dog sledding.  Everyone thought I was nuts for passing up the chance to ride along, but all I wanted to do was wander around the kennel.  So I did.  The pictures are misleadingly serene - the din of 250 dogs barking, howling, and pumping themselves up about the day's run was indescribable.

It had never ocurred to me that dogs would pump themselves up before a race! It must have indeed been a "din". Hence the new expression: A din of barking dogs...

It had never occurred to me, either, Jim. The noise in there was incredible. Perhaps even more interesting was the range of sounds the dogs made - "normal" barks were only a small portion of the squeals, yips, howling, and even sounds I've never heard dogs make before.

You asked in a survey a while back what we liked to see on your blog. Well I miss your stories. Lately I've seen more like this one with a VERY brief caption and then just pictures. I really MISS reading your great write-ups. I'm curious why you did not take a ride. I would have.

Interesting point! Thank you for asking. There's a pretty simple reason for the short posts - lately I have been pretty swamped with work and consulting contracts. Getting some pics up on the blog is sometimes all I can manage right now.

As for the dog sledding, I didn't go on the ride for two key reasons. I really did want to poke around the kennel, take pictures, and make some sketches. It was also around $80.00 to go on a 3-hour dog sled ride, and I was feeling cheap. As it was, I had a fabulous morning of fun, lots of questions answered, a few sketches and plenty of photos, for the cost of the 20-minute drive.
